How do I install InBoxer?

The InBoxer software file is a compressed, self installing executable file. Once it is downloaded or found on the disk, double click on the InBoxerSetup.exe icon to install InBoxer on your system. Follow the on-screen instructions.

We highly recommend using the Express Install, which will automatically create the needed folders and buttons. An optional Custom Install is available for experienced users.

What is the trial period?

You may use InBoxer for 21 days prior to purchasing the product. InBoxer is fully functional during the trial period and may be used without limitations (subject to the End User License Agreement). Each time Outlook is started during the trial period, you will be asked if you want to activate InBoxer. Just click Cancel until you purchase the product.

If your license period expires before you activate InBoxer, InBoxer will stop filtering mail. The InBoxer buttons and selected InBoxer menu items will be gray (grayed out) and unavailable for use.

Even if the license period should expire, all of your training data and setup information remains safe. Should you purchase InBoxer and enter the activation key after installation, filtering will resume as before.

1. After installation, you You now should have Outlook InBoxer-Blocked and InBoxer-Review folders.

These folders usually appear just below the Inbox folder, as shown below. However, in certain Outlook configurations, they may appear within the Inbox folder. If you see a “+” next to the Inbox folder, expand it to reveal the InBoxer folders.

How does the activation key work?

Once you purchase InBoxer directly from us, you will receive an Activation Key via email. The key will be sent to the email address you used during the purchase process. Usually, the key arrives within the hour. However, during maintenance and other periods, it could take up to eight hours to receive your activation key. (Note: If you purchased InBoxer from a retail store or from a reseller, this key may have already been entered for you.)

InBoxer 1.2 or greater activates automatically when the email is received. If you are using an earlier version of InBoxer or if you are installing InBoxer on a PC other than the one in which the email was received, you must activate InBoxer manually.

Some plug-ins require key activation in order to function. When you purchase InBoxer with premium plug-ins for BlackBerry and handheld devices, the activation letter will provide a key to activate the plug-ins.

To manually activate InBoxer, you must enter both the email address and the key exactly as shown in the message. Do not use a new or different email address. The capitalization in both the email address and the activation key must match exactly. Be sure to remove any leading or trailing blank spaces. Our registration key verification system is very sensitive.

If you purchased InBoxer from a third party, you may not receive an activation message from us. In that case, look for your license key from them. The key may have been entered for you. If not, the activation key will be in two parts. The first part will look like an email address. That should be entered into the email address field. The second part will look like a series of numbers of letters separated by hyphens. This is the activation key. Remember that you must use the first part supplied by your vendor, not your email address, into the activation dialog.

If you purchased more than one license, you may use this key on multiple systems. By special request, you may ask for keys for individual systems. Contact sales for individual keys.

You may use InBoxer with an unlimited number of email addresses on a single PC, and you may use InBoxer with email addresses that do not match the one used for the activation key. InBoxer is licensed to use on a single PC. Please contact us for multiple unit or terminal server licensing.

If you have purchased directly from the InBoxer web site and you have not received a your key after waiting eight hours, please email us at the support page. We will generate a key for you and we usually respond within one business day.

What does the system tray icon mean?

InBoxer adds a new icon to the system tray. While it is similar in function to the Microsoft Outlook mail icon, there is one significant difference. The Microsoft Outlook icon will become an envelope when any type of new mail arrives, including spam or junk. The InBoxer icon will change to a green envelope only when there is current new mail that is not blocked as spam. (You can turn off the InBoxer system tray icon in the InBoxer -> Preferences dialog.)

The icon may be in one of three states:

Thumbs up iconThe green thumbs up icon is the normal InBoxer state. It means that there are no messages waiting and that InBoxer is not currently filtering any messages.

Envelope iconThe green envelope icon indicates that there is new mail, which is not spam, that is available to read. (Technically, it means that there is new mail in any watched folder as defined in the Control Panel.) You may read any new messages by double clicking on this icon.

icon bars Anti Spam Installation and SetupThe green envelope has a yellow background when InBoxer is filtering your email. The amount of yellow is related to the activity level. Typically this happens immediately after Outlook fetches your mail.

If you hover your mouse of the InBoxer icon (in any state), you will see a count of the number of messages InBoxer has handled since the last time Microsoft Outlook was launched.

How do I get InBoxer to perform better?

InBoxer learns from you and will quickly become better as you teach it. How do you train InBoxer?

Review all the messages in the INBOXER-REVIEW folder often, particularly during the first week or two. Check each message and click either the KEEP icon, if it is not spam, or the BLOCK icon, if it is spam. Each click teaches InBoxer about your interests.

You may want to periodically look at the messages in the INBOXER-BLOCKED folder. If InBoxer ever makes a mistake, indicate this by pressing KEEP. InBoxer usually will not make the same mistake again. You may soon find, like many people, that you will not need to look in this folder very often.

InBoxer has disappeared! What should I do?

If the buttons and InBoxer menu have vanished, it may be because Outlook disabled it. Under certain circumstances, Outlook may disable one or all add-ins when there are problems with Outlook. These problems may have nothing to do with InBoxer at all. Simply enabling InBoxer will make everything work again.

To enable InBoxer within Outlook 2002/XP/2003, take the following steps:

• Open Outlook.
• Click on Help
• Click on About Microsoft Outlook. A menu similar to this one will appear:

faq aboutoutlook Anti Spam Installation and Setup

Click on the Disabled Items button. If InBoxer is listed, click to enable and then exit and restart Outlook

To enable InBoxer within Outlook 2002/XP/2003, take the following steps:

• Open Outlook
• Select the Tools menu
• Clock on Options.
• Click on Other.
• Click On Advanced Options.
• Clock on Com Add-ins.
• If InBoxer is not checked, check the box and restart Outlook

If these steps do not work, there are a few steps that can be taken to automatically repair InBoxer.

Try the InBoxer repair program. (Note: The program supports version 1.2 or later.) Download the program from http://www.in-boxer.com/InBoxerRepair.exe and follow the instructions. This program fixes most problems.

If this does not solve the problem, a registry entry may need to be changed. Make sure that you are confident that and you are comfortable editing registry entries. Also, before making any changes to your registry, please make a back-up copy of your registry. (If you are not comfortable editing your registry, skip this step.)

Check the “LoadBehavior” registry entry at:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOfficeOutlookAddinsSpamBayes.Outlook Addin.

Then, very carefully, LoadBehavior should have a value of 3. If it doesn’t, change it to 3, restart your computer and try again.

Finally, if the problem continues, please send a message to InBoxer support using START -> PROGRAMS -> INBOXER OUTLOOK ADD-IN -> EMAIL TECHNICAL SUPPORT. This step creates an email message and attaches log files that will enable InBoxer to diagnose your problem. Otherwise, contact InBoxer support.

May I delete messages in the InBoxer-Blocked folder?

You may delete messages in your INBOXER-BLOCKED folder at any time. As messages enter the folder, InBoxer’s statistical filtering data is updated. However, if you delete the messages and reinstall InBoxer, InBoxer will only be able to create new filtering data from existing messages. (You may keep your existing data by using EXPORT STATISTICS before uninstalling and then using IMPORT STATISTICS after installing.)

InBoxer 1.2 has an option for automatically deleting blocked emails. It is located under INBOXER-> PREFERENCES. Check the box and indicate the time frame using the slider.

How many users can install InBoxer? How many licenses do I need?

Each InBoxer license entitles you to install InBoxer on one personal computer. You may use it with an unlimited number of email addresses and you may use it with an unlimited number of users on that one licensed personal computer.

On a CITRIX box, your InBoxer license allows for one simultaneous use.

In addition, under certain circumstances, the InBoxer license allows you to install InBoxer on a second personal computer under the same license. If the primary user of the main personal computer also uses a laptop or a home PC, that primary user may also install InBoxer on that laptop or home PC. There is no limit to the number of users or email addresses used on a licensed PC.

Each license does not allow the user to copy InBoxer for use by different people on multiple PCs. For example, a single PC license does not allow InBoxer to be installed on multiple desktop PCs in an office. A single PC license does not allow InBoxer to be used by a family on multiple PCs (although an entire family may use InBoxer on one PC).

What is the current version of InBoxer?

The current version of InBoxer is version 2.4.

My trial period is over. What do I do?

The trial version of InBoxer is identical in every way to the full version of InBoxer, except for the time limit. When you purchase an InBoxer license, you will receive an activation key corresponding to your email address. Enter the information and the 21 day restriction is removed. (It may be necessary to close Microsoft Outlook and then restart Outlook for InBoxer to activate.) It is not necessary to reinstall InBoxer.

It is a simple matter to obtain an activation key: select HELP from the INBOXER menu and then select REGISTER. Click the PURCHASE to proceed to a website and purchase the software. You can also purchase a license online at our website, http://www.inboxer.com.
